Five times Netflix's Black Mirror predicted the future of tech
Netflix's darkly addictive sci-fi series Black Mirror claims to show the'twisted, high-tech' of the near-future, but several technologies featured in the drama-filled episodes can already be found in our lives today. These include killer robot dogs, a social credit rating system and autonomous pizza delivery. In one of the most memorable recent episodes, 'The Entire History of You,' a contact lens featured a built-in camera that allowed humans to re-watch their memories. The concept is less futuristic than you might think, because Google may be already working on a similar device, while a startup is set to unleash a VR application that enables you to relive your experiences in a digital world, and Snapchat has released a device to capture memories. And let us not forget the second episode in the third series, when an augmented reality tester dies in both the natural and digital worlds.

Could a Dog Truly Love a Robot?
The author of Dog Is Love: Why and How Your Dog Loves You responds to Andrew Silverman's "Furgen." It doesn't take any special technology to see that dogs love people. Hildegard von Bingen, in the 11th century, noted that "a certain natural community of behavior binds [the dog] to humans. Therefore, he responds to man, understand him, loves him and likes to stay with him." It could fairly be said that, like Othello, dogs love not wisely, but too well.

Giant squid is seen hunting prey on video for the first time ever in footage taken by robot
Scientists have recorded the first footage of a giant squid hunting in the wild. The elusive creatures are notoriously difficult to film, as their habitat is housands of feet under the sea, where it's dark and the crushing pressure of water requires specialist equipment. While several dead specimens have washed up on shore, the first still images of a living giant squid in the wild weren't recorded until 2004 and video wasn't obtained until 2012. Now marine biologists have, for the first time, captured footage of Architeuthis dux hunting prey in the wild. The footage was captured in 2019, but researchers have now released analysis of the creature's behavior.
Google's $99 bedside display is great--even if it thinks my dog snores too much
While Google's optional Sleep Sensing feature is the headline here, there's a lot to love about this display from a performance standpoint. Google Assistant is quick to respond and execute commands--this being a Google product, there's no support for Amazon Alexa or Apple's Siri--bolstered by accurate response to gesture commands. The Hub's machine learning chip (the same chip you'll find in the Nest Mini and Nest Audio), offers 1.2 TeraOPS of processing power to help Google learn your most common commands and respond to them faster than ever before. The Nest Hub (second-gen) can help track your sleep, manage your Google-enabled smart home, and more. The 7-inch touchscreen display houses three far-field microphones to process voice commands.

Samsung unveils AI-powered robot vacuum at CES that uses sensors found in self-driving cars
Samsung's new robotic vacuum uses the same LiDAR sensor technology as self-driving cars to detect obstacles and react accordingly. According to the company, the 3D sensors on the JetBot 90 AI are sophisticated enough to know which objects it can bump up against, like a table leg, and which to give a wide berth to, like a houseplant or pet poop. Perhaps best of all, the vacuum empties its contents into an easily portable pouch that can be lifted out and tossed every few months. Samsung rolled out the JetBot 90 AI at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where it also unveiled an AI-powered laundry system that learns user preferences and recommend optimal washing and drying cycles. Powered by Intel, the JetBot 90 AI combines a LiDAR sensor, similar to that used in autonomous vehicles, with AI-enhanced object-recognition technology to detect distance and track precise locations.

Get a free Nest Hub when you buy a Nest Hub Max
A July 4th sale makes it tempting to outfit your home with Google smart displays. Best Buy, Home Depot and B&H Photo will throw in a free Nest Hub when you buy a Nest Hub Max for $229. That means you'll pay $229 for a bundle valued at about $318, which is a great discount on two of Google's most capable smart displays. The 10-inch Nest Hub Max is one of our favorite Google Assistant devices, earning a score of 86. It's arguably the best speaker of all of Google's first-party displays and its larger screen makes it best for viewing photos and watching video.
Google's Nest Hub Max is bigger, pricier and you can make calls
A year ago, we were so impressed with what was then called the Google Home Hub, we called it one of the top 10 best tech products of 2018, with one caveat. We wished it could be bigger. Now, the all-new, and yes, larger version is in stores, with a bigger 10-inch screen (up from 7 inches) higher price tag ($229, vs. $129) and a confusing new name. The new Google Nest Hub Max, with a ten-inch screen, back to back with the old Nest Hub, with a 7-inch screen. The old Home Hub is now called the Nest Hub, and the larger, new version is the Nest Hub Max.
Video speaker showdown: Which is best -- Amazon, Google or Facebook?
USA TODAY's Jefferson Graham takes a look at three new connected speakers that all have video features. Amazon has enlarged and enhanced its Echo Show device, which brings video to its line of smart speaker, Google counters with the Home Hub, adding video to the Home line of speakers, and Facebook is in there as well, with its controversial Portal video speaker. We've taken all for intensive test drives. Which one is for you? The Google speaker, ($149, on sale for $99 during Black Friday sales) is our all-around favorite of the trio because it does more than the others.

Apple Siri Speaker: 5 Expected Features Including Improved Beats Audio, Touchscreen
Apple is rumored to be making a smart speaker on the lines of the Google Home and Amazon Echo. Phone leaker Sonny Dickson tweeted Thursday that the device, which would run using the company's voice assistant Siri and its AirPlay functionality, would use the Siri voice assistant and AirPlay functionality. He further said that the device would use the company's Beats Audio technology and will run on iOS. While Apple is still mum on the device's existence, let alone its features, there are chances that the company could launch the device at the World Wide Developers Conference in June in San Francisco. Facial recognition tech: According to CNET, the device might have a built-in camera like the Amazon Echo Look to detect multiple users.
